In a study, 750 people believed at least one of the rumors about the proposed Islamic cultural center. So there are two conclusions: 1) it is easy to manipulate people's believe with insinuating pictures or quotes: 2) no many people are willing to reverse their opinion.
Even when people take time to learn the facts and change their opinions, the effort often dont work because people dont like being told they are wrong so it could be simple ego. But some investigators are working to know how people can be so strong in their believes.
